چکیده

This paper describes curtain airbag gas delivery system development work using CFD analysis. The objective of developing gas delivery system was to achieve uniform inflation and reasonable time to position for oblique pole test with 5 %ile female. CFD analysis has been conducted to design gas delivery system of 3 row curtain airbag. The gas delivery system consists of T-diffuser and flexible gas delivery tube. T-diffuser hole sizes and the hole sizes in flexible gas delivery tube system have been determined through CFD simulations. Confirmation static deployment test has been conducted to confirm the design specification from CFD analysis. In the static deployment test, pressure ports were installed to measure the pressure at several locations in the curtain airbag. It was found that the bag kinematics and pressures in the test were close to the simulation kinematics and results.

Autoliv Uses MSC.Dytran® for Simulation of Innovative Side-Curtain Airbag

Side-curtain airbags have demonstrated the ability to help reduce the possibility of ejection and serious injury during automotive collisions. Engineers developing these new types of airbags are aided by Virtual Product Development tools (VPD), which allow the engineer to more fully analyze the airbag mechanism and dynamic inflation. Autoliv, the world’s largest manufacturer of automotive safet...

A Cost–Benefit Analysis to Assess the Effectiveness of Frontal Center Curtain Airbag

Several new varieties of airbags are under consideration for development. However, their commercialization decision must be backed by a positive Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA) outcome. In this study, we propose a CBA framework for the frontal center curtain airbag, a newly designed safety system intended to reduce the injury risk of rear-seat passengers. The proposed CBA covers not only economic b...

Optimization of an Automobile Curtain Airbag using Design of Experiments

A side collision of an automobile poses a higher risk of injury compared to those of a frontal collision. Therefore governments and insurance companies establish and implement new safety standards in order to ensure the safety of the occupants throughout the world. Most of the suggested standards aim to reduce the Head Injury Criterion (HIC). Widely used side airbag systems, including the curta...

Simulation of a Compartmented Airbag Deployment Using an Explicit, Coupled Euler/lagrange Method with Adaptive Euler Domains

The paper presents a new simulation method for airbags with multiple compartments. In recent years many accidents happened with passengers that were out of position (OOP) when their airbag deployed. Therefore new safety regulations have come into effect in the USA and an airbag now has to meet several requirements that concern out of positioning. In meeting these requirements simulations of dep...

Mathematical Modelling of the Early Phase Deployment of a Passenger Airbag – Folding Using Origami Theory and Inflation Using Ls-dyna Particle Method Authors:

Initial evaluation of the particle method for mathematical out-of-position simulations was performed. The evaluation was carried out by means of static inflation and impactor tests. In the out-of-position load case, the occupant is initially positioned very close to airbag module and the interaction airbag-occupant occurs during the early deployment phase of the airbag. Thus a realistic represe...
